Born and raised in Akron, Ohio and a resident of the Atlanta area for over 20 years, Jennings has been building his business empires for years.

We catch up with CEO TJ to talk about his current business ventures and what he has planned for 2026 and beyond.

Boss XL Mag - What are some of your business ventures and how you got started?

CEO TJ - I always had a passion to be a business owner and a drive that led me to explore various industries before focusing on grooming and fashion.

My professional background includes over 25 years in fitness and styling and healthcare sectors. One of my first significant ventures was building a successful cleaning business and group homes for individuals with developmental disabilities.

That Away comes from looking up to God as he directs my path. Always looking forward to what is ahead. Forgetting about what’s behind but grateful for the past. 

Boss XL Mag - What are some challenges you face everyday and how do you overcome them?

CEO TJ -   Here are some of my daily challenges and the main points that I follow to get me through and profitable.

 •    Balancing Multiple Ventures: Managing the high-traffic That Away Blade Runnerz Club barbershop alongside his custom apparel line, That Away Design, requires constant coordination between grooming services and retail operations.

    •    Leading by Example: Addressing management challenges by prioritizing relationships and treating my barbers, stylists and clients with a consistent level of respect.

    •    Adapting to Failure: Rather than being discouraged by setbacks, I uses them as data points to adapt and grow both professionally and personally.

    •    Surrounding myself with Talent: I emphasize the importance of surrounding myself with "good people" who motivate and challenge me to be the best version of myself. 

Boss XL Mag - What are some advice you would give some future entrepreneurs? 

CEO TJ -  I would advise new business owners not to fear mistakes but to use them as the necessary data to pivot and improve.

    •    Master Your "Standard": Whether it’s a haircut or a piece of customized apparel, I emphasize setting a high bar—like his "That Away" standard—and never settling for less. Consistency in quality is what builds a loyal community.

    •    Surround Yourself with Growth: I strongly believe in the power of your circle. My advice is to surround yourself with people who challenge you and motivate you to be a better version of yourself every day.

    •    Integrity is Everything: In a service-based business like a barbershop, I stress that respect and professional excellence are the foundations of longevity. Treat your team and your clients with the same level of high regard.

    •    Diversify Your Passion: Don't be afraid to merge interests. By combining my love for grooming with That Away Design (apparel), he created a unique market niche that a standard barbershop couldn't reach alone.
