The Hoops, Hopes and Dreams premiere at The King Center felt more like a gathering of purpose than a traditional film screening. From the moment you walked the black carpet at the Yolanda D. King Theater for the Performing Arts, the energy was warm, intentional, and rooted in community. This wasn’t about being seen — it was about being present.

The room was full of creatives, leaders, educators, and people who clearly care about the future of young Black talent. The film set the tone early. It’s raw, thoughtful, and honest, using basketball as the entry point but quickly expanding into bigger conversations around access, pressure, and what happens when hope meets reality. You could feel people reacting in real time — nods, quiet moments, and that collective pause when something hits close to home.

After the screening, the talkback took the night to another level. Dr. Bernice A. King brought depth and grounding to the conversation in a way only she can. Her reflections about her father, Martin Luther King, love of basketball, tied the film’s message back to legacy and purpose. Producers Alexys Feaster and Executive Producer Dr. Jatali Bellanton added valuable insight into the intentional choices behind the storytelling and why stories like these need to be told for future generations.

The conversation was smoothly led by Tinisha L. Agramonte, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Opportunity and Inclusion Officer at The Walt Disney Company. She kept it flowing, engaging, and real.

Hoops, Hopes, and Dreams is a powerful documentary, a strong conversation, and a reminder that dreams don’t survive without support systems. Hoops, Hopes and Dreams delivered exactly what the title promises — and the setting at The King Center made it resonate even deeper.

Hoops, Hopes, and Dreams Premieres on Hulu January 19th, MLK Day
