The special screening of The Brittney Griner Story at the 30th Annual American Black Film Festival in Miami delivered one of the festival’s most emotional and thought-provoking moments. As one of the marquee presentations of the weekend, the documentary gave audiences a deeply personal look into the life of WNBA superstar Brittney Griner beyond the headlines, politics, and media attention that surrounded her story. The screening attracted strong interest from attendees who came not just to watch a film, but to experience a conversation about perseverance, identity, and resilience.

Directed by Alexandria Stapleton, the documentary moves beyond the public narrative that many people remember and dives into Griner’s personal and professional journey. The film explores the circumstances that led her to play overseas, her detainment in Russia, and the emotional toll that came with being at the center of an international story. Rather than presenting only the political side of the situation, the documentary humanizes Griner and gives audiences a deeper understanding of the woman behind the basketball jersey. Through archival footage, interviews, and intimate moments, viewers see not only her pain and uncertainty but also her strength and determination.

One of the strongest aspects of the documentary is how it highlights the impact the experience had on those closest to her, especially her wife Cherelle. The documentary shows the role family and loved ones played during one of the most difficult periods of her life and captures the emotional weight carried throughout the ordeal. The film also touches on larger conversations surrounding race, gender, equality, and the pressures that professional athletes often face away from the court.

Following the screening, the audience was treated to a powerful discussion moderated by Jemele Hill alongside Dawn Staley, Cherelle Griner, and director Alexandria Stapleton. The conversation added another layer to the experience as the panel reflected on the emotional process of telling Griner’s story and the importance of showing her humanity rather than just the headlines.

The energy in the room reflected what the documentary itself represented: strength under pressure and finding purpose through adversity. More than a sports documentary, The Brittney Griner Story felt like a reminder that behind every public figure is a personal journey often unseen by the world. It was a standout moment at ABFF and a powerful example of storytelling that informs, inspires, and leaves a lasting impact.
