Off White x New York Liberty: Fashion Empowerment, and Celebrating Black Excellence in Women’s Sports

The Off-White™ and New York Liberty Collaboration

Off-White™ makes history by becoming the first Official Style and Culture Curator for the New York Liberty WNBA team. The partnership between Off-White™ and the New York Liberty marks a significant moment between the sports and fashion industries by releasing its varsity jacket at the start of the WNBA season on Sunday, September 22, 2024. A limited number of jackets will be available for pre-order for fans during select playoff games at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Blurring the lines between athletics and high fashion, this collaboration taps into a growing cultural movement where both industries are becoming more interconnected. We saw this with the Williams sisters wearing their braids and beads on the tennis court in the 90s, to more currently, Serena showing her fashion sense right before her retirement in 2022. The collaboration between Off-White™ and the New York Liberty team not only elevates the WNBA team but equally highlights the potential of women’s sports as a vital part of leading a new era in culture, further amplified by Virgil Abloh’s Off-White™ unique brand, known for pushing boundaries and redefining fashion’s purpose in everyday life.

About: Virgil Abloh

Virgil Abloh was a groundbreaking designer, best known for founding the luxury streetwear brand Off-White™ and serving as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear. With a background in architecture and a DJ career, Abloh brought a multidisciplinary approach to fashion, blending high fashion with street culture. His innovative designs through Off-White™ challenged traditional fashion norms and empowered a new generation of creatives. Abloh’s work, deeply rooted in Black culture and identity, left an indelible mark on global fashion before his passing in 2021.

Fashion and Business Synergy

The Off-White™ and New York Liberty collaboration reflects Abloh’s legacy of luxury street style. It also reflects the marriage of high fashion and sports by merging luxury fashion with professional women’s sports, in this case, the WNBA. This is a strategic move for Off-White™, signaling an understanding of the cultural and financial importance of women’s sports today. By aligning itself with the Liberty, Off-White™ taps into a market that celebrates athleticism, women’s empowerment, and high fashion, all while expanding its audience base beyond traditional fashion consumers. Plus, 85% of all purchases in America are made by women. Go figure. The WNBA's influence has been growing, and Off-White™ is smartly positioning itself to capitalize on this momentum, pushing forward a narrative where fashion supports, and amplifies the voices of female athletes, as well as celebrating feminism. Also known as the mothers of the culture. There will be a special capsule released fresh every season. The initiative plans to coordinate with cultural programming like Women’s History Month, Black History Month, and Pride.

Feminism and Empowerment

The collaboration between Off-White™ and the New York Liberty goes beyond fashion—it’s a powerful statement of women’s empowerment. In recent years we’ve seen women’s sports rise, especially basketball and the WNBA. The WNBA has long been an advocate for equal pay and recognition in sports, and this partnership helps amplify that message. By aligning with a fashion brand that further challenges the status quo, the collaboration serves as a feminist platform where powerful women, athletes, are celebrated not just for their skills on the court but additionally for the cultural impact they create. These female athletes can use their talent, as well as style to push the culture forward. “WNBA players are being seen as style icons like never before, while also driving culture in previously unimagined ways,” said New York Liberty CEO, Keia Clarke Female athletes are no longer confined to sports but are emerging as icons of feminist ideals, in control of their own image, showing strength, style, and leadership.

Supporting Black Excellence

The  WNBA is home to many talented Black female athletes, and the Off-White™ collaboration celebrates their contributions to sports and culture. With Virgil Abloh’s legacy at the forefront, this partnership aligns with the brand’s ongoing support of Black creatives. The collaboration merges Black culture with mainstream appeal, showcasing these women as influential figures not just in sports but across industries. Abloh’s work with Off-White™ continues to empower the next generation of Black talent, creating a bridge between fashion, sports, and culture while honoring Black excellence.
