As a Native Virgin Islander, this experience was a true honor.
On May 2, 2025, at exactly 1:00 PM, the Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack in Estate Bovoni thundered to life as the heart of the St. Thomas Carnival Races. This annual spectacle delivered more than just a sporting event—it brought together the electric fusion of Caribbean pride, fashion-forward flair, and cultural excellence.
A Rainy Day for the Record Books
As the day progressed, dark clouds rolled in and rain began to fall—but not even the weather could dull the shine of Race Day. In fact, the brief downpour became a gift. The track transformed into a slick, polished runway where horses galloped with strength and grace—a perfect storm of speed and elegance.
Spectators, unfazed and adorned with bright umbrellas and bold energy, leaned into the moment. Cheers soared over the hills with every pass of hooves on earth. This was Carnival in its rawest form: vibrant, unpredictable, and unstoppable.
A Gathering of Power, Pride, and People
The Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack, which opened just two years ago, has already cemented itself as a beloved cornerstone of Carnival. And this year, it hosted a star-studded audience:
• Senator Novelle Francis Jr.
• Senator Avery Lewis
• Governor Albert Bryan Jr.
• Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett
• Bobby Huckabee, owner of the racetrack and Southland Gaming
• Renowned artist Adam O
• Community leaders, performers, and dignitaries from across the Virgin Islands
The crowd reflected the beauty of the people—generational, fashionable, and filled with pride.
VIP Hospitality, Island Style
For those inside the VIP Trackside Lounge, the experience was first-class. Guests were greeted with:
• Charcuterie spreads and elegant hors d’oeuvres
• Welcome champagne
• Three complimentary drinks
• Meticulously plated gourmet meals
• Optional bottle service and premier seating
The attention to detail and service highlighted what Virgin Islanders know best—how to host with heart and high standards.
Fashion Meets Fierce Competition
Beyond the races themselves, the sideline fashion show could rival any runway. Locals and visitors alike stepped out in bold colors, floral hats, madras prints, and modern island elegance.
Every photo taken on Race Day told a story of heritage meeting modern style—and every look reminded us that Carnival is just as much about expression as it is celebration.
A Legacy in Motion
As the final horses crossed the finish line, a wave of emotion swept the crowd. This wasn’t just about racing—it was about honoring a deep tradition.
The Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack, named after one of the territory’s legendary horsemen, stands tall today as a symbol of renewal. It’s a place where community gathers, culture is honored, and generations unite in shared celebration.
Until Next Time…
Mark your calendars—because the Carnival Races have once again proven that the Virgin Islands know how to celebrate life, community, and legacy with unmatched brilliance.
This is Kentucky Derby, Virgin Islands Style.
See you next time for another unforgettable experience.
