Author Spotlight on Diahann Carroll: Persistence and Perseverance

Bronx native Diahann Carroll overcame many obstacles as a mother to nine children to becoming a successful entrepreneur and author. Following her passion of writing, she loves telling tales of the changing direction of the ebbs and flows of her life and the streets of New York.

Her latest book release "Oops!! A Bronx Girl's Tale" does not fail to deliver on the goods on navigating the streets and balancing a love life.

Boss XL Mag - What was the inspiration behind you writing "Oops, A Bronx Girl's Tale"?

Diahann Carroll - The inspiration behind me writing this trilogy was I hadn’t seen any books or movies for that matter since Crooklyn from Spike Lee coming out of New York. 85% of the book is about my life and 15% is embellished. I love using my imagination and I love changing the ending of a story. I knew that people raised in New York, especially the Bronx, would definitely have memory flashbacks and probably could smell the air when reading this Trilogy

Boss XL Mag - What are some of the messages you are trying to convey to your readers?

Diahann Carroll - When people learn about me, especially my age which I am now 54, and the amount of children I have, what I want them to convey is that despite having nine children, I have already written five successful books. I have recorded a trailer for my first book recently.  I want parents to know that even if you are a married couple or a single parent, to know that your life has not ended because you have children. I know that life throws you some stones but use those stones to help build you a house.

I want readers to see that anything can be done because I did it, a single parent with nine children and no government help; just myself working a 9 to 5 job. It’s not a hopeless situation if you keep your mind on what you wanna do because it definitely can be done. That’s what I want people to walk away from when they find out who’s behind writing these books.

Boss XL Mag - You have sold thousands of copies independently, what were some of the challenges?

Diahann Carroll -A lot of my challenges were and still are getting people to share my business.  My books should have been went viral, but because we don’t support each other like we should it’s taking some time and I’m not saying I won’t get there.  I just know that by pushing myself, I will eventually get there. The challenge is getting other people to believe in you. Everybody has their hustle so nobody has time to pull the other one up. You have to get down and do it for yourself and unfortunately, it might take longer than it should because you don’t have that type of support from your community.

Most of the people who have bought my books have been strangers, not just my friends and my family, so the challenge is getting people to see your vision.   What I’ve learned in this industry is that my vision is not everybody’s vision so everybody won’t get it like I do.

Boss XL Mag - What are some tips you would give to a person who wants to write a book about their life?

Diahann Carroll - Tips that I would give someone on writing their first book?  Don’t give up on your topic because it’s someone out there that needs to hear your story.

I almost changed the format of my book because someone told me it’s too much profanity in it and they wanted me to change it. If I had done that, it wouldn’t be the story I wanted to tell. Now I tell people to stand firm behind their assignment. Do not let anyone take you off your path because of that one negative feedback that I got. I eventually got 1000 more positive reviews.

Boss XL Mag - What are some upcoming projects you have coming up in 2025?

Diahann Carroll - In 2025 I have two books I want to publish. One of them is called Deceived and the other book is titled Infidelity. They have been copywritten and waiting to be published. I also will have two more trailers out for my trilogy.  I plan to shop my Trilogy

“A Bronx Girls Tale” to Tubi.
